However, when the fan only is on, it shows the actual temperature in the room. When you are setting the Timer, it displays the count-down timer.

You can control everything from the Frigidaire remote. You can also turn Remote Sensing on and off from the remote. When it’s on, a corresponding LED blinks on the AC unit to show it’s activated. Normally, the window air conditioner controls the temperature, based on what the temperature is at the unit. When Remote Sensing is activated, the unit then controls the temperature based on what the temperature is where the remote is located (like across the room). This is a very useful air conditioning feature.

The Frigidaire FRA086AT7 Air Conditioner has an easy-to-clean antimicrobial filter which reduces bacteria, room odors, and other airborne particles. It also has a built-in air ionizer and purifier. Turning it on will automatically remove dust and impurities from the air while either the AC or fan is running.

Installation is easy as the unit weighs just over 60 lbs. The air conditioner comes with a window installation kit, a manual, foam that you can put between the windows, and self-adhesive weather stripping to cover any openings. All hardware is included. You just need a Phillips screwdriver to install it and a drill if you want to screw the top of the unit into your window. It is Energy-Star Compliant. “The best thing about this little AC unit is the “remote sensing” feature. It has a thermometer on the remote control and can use that as the input for the thermostat, set the remote in the middle of the room and it will keep it at an even temperature. It also has an “econo mode” setting and a “clean air” ionic air filter. It is small, relatively quiet, and the 8,000 BTU’s do a fantastic job keeping the place cool (it hardly ever runs in econo mode but still keeps it cold).”

“One key point – it has two hoses – input and output (not one like many units out there). It’s very good at evaporating the water it takes out of the room (the two hoses are supposedly responsible for this efficiency). I have yet to empty the tank. The unit comes with a window package that holds the tubes in place (its made of heavy duty plastic). As to moving it around, no big problems – it is a beast to move on the stairs, but ….. its an air conditioner, not a fan. I normally use it to cool down a 20×20 room (9 foot ceilings). “It does not cool as quickly as the old freon model but it does cool the space (about 20×15) quickly. I use my furnace ducting to move the cooled air throughout the house so it runs quite a bit in these hot days. It does occasionally have a humming sound for short periods of time that the booklet says is caused by humidity levels and they are high this year, but otherwise I can’t tell it is running which is a great improvement over the old one.”

I do wish the energy saver feature would use a lower fan setting for the 2 minute air circulating feature. It tends to be a bit louder than it otherwise would be, but not a major fault. The SPT SF-608R Portable Evaporative Air Cooler gets even reviews from our customers. 50% love and 50% hate it. It seems that those who knew that it is an air cooler, not an air conditioner, are very pleased with it’s low cost and low energy use.

Evaporative coolers like the SPT SF-608R Portable Air Cooler use the principle of evaporative cooling and endothermic energy exchange. Though it sounds complicated, it really isn’t.

Basically, this cooler spreads water over a membrane and then blows air on it. As the air passes over the membrane, it evaporates the water. Since you don’t get something for nothing, the water that evaporated had to use some energy from the air that went by.

The energy it used was taken out of the heat from the air. The result? Air leaving the evaporative cooler is at a lower temperature than the air entering it. Voila! Cooler air.

Does it work? Well, think about when you take a shower, or hose down your kids on a hot summer day. As the water on your skin drys (evaporates), your skin temperature cools and you feel cooler. This is exactly the same principle, and it works.

Why not use an air conditioner? Well, aside from the ecological aspects of not wanting to make machines full of refrigerant, the SPT SF-608R portable evaporative air cooler uses much less electricity than a conventional or energy efficient air conditioner.

How much does it save? Well, this unit uses about 60 watts, whereas a typical small air condition might use 400 watts. That’s a savings of 340 watts or roughly 7 cents per hour (assuming 20 cents per kilowatt hour cost of electricity). If you run the SPT 24 hours per day and 30 days a month, you save about $50 a month if you run and air cooler instead of air conditioning all day long.

Does it really work? We’re back to the 50/50 split on customer satisfaction. If you know what it is and don’t expect more out of it, you’ll be happy. What do we mean by this? If you wet your t-shirt to cool off on a hot summer day, it will work much better on a dry day than on a humid one. Without getting too scientific again, these are made for dry climates (think arid desert type climates).

“First off, this is NOT an air conditioner. If you expect your room to be freezing cold, this is not the product for you. It’s a COOLER, and it does its job very well. It works by evaporating water. Try soaking a T-shirt, wringing it out, and putting it on wet to get the effect. It doesn’t work very well in humid areas, but it works GREAT where the air is dry. I’m in southern California, where the humidity varies pretty widely. I place the cooler six or eight feet from my chair, and on the hottest days I’m quite comfortable. “

Upon setup and as I began using the product I ran into several issues…. the directions on setup and installation were unclear, even for such a seemingly simple process…. while the air conditioner is said to cool a room up to 250-300 sq feet, it was struggling to cover my 180. And while it does seem to do a better job at dehumidifying than cooling, the amount of drainage from the collected water is unmanageable. The product was said to be mostly self-evaporating with a reservoir tank that will hold the excess. I was aware that the unit may need occasional drainage. I however am unable to run the unit for more than 3-4 hours before the tank is full and shuts itself off completely. …I think calling this air conditioner portable is a little misleading. In order for me to move the unit into another room I need to unplug the unit from the wall, disconnect the exhaust hose, unscrew the window fitting to change the size and remove it from my window frame- then transport the unit to the other room and refit the exhaust hose and window fittings . It doesn’t sound like too much, but the whole process takes about 15-20 minutes…”

“I didn’t want a window unit because I work at home and wanted to be able to roll the AC back and forth between the bedroom and my office. In the middle of a major heat wave, I got desperate and installed this Frigidaire 6000BTU in the bedroom so I could get some sleep. I found that it cooled the room to about 72 degrees (100+ and humid outside during a major heat wave) within about 90 minutes. I was so amazed at how much better this works than the other ones that I immediately bought another one for the office. The total cost for these two vastly superior window units was about fifty bucks more than buying one portable. “

“I have this unit installed in the bedroom. A very quiet unit, can hardly hear the compressor kick on. Perfect for the bedroom….12×14. The noise is less than a box fan. I leave it running 24/7 and surprisingly does not effect the power bill a lot, seems real efficient. I had to adjust the tilt of the unit after the first install because of a sloshing sound from the fan in the rear of the unit. This was caused by the fan sloshing the water. The unit needs to be nice and level. The buttons on the front are easily cleaned, and the remote is the same way with its flat design. The filter comes out and is cleaned with out any effort. The unit does not have a fresh air/recirculate switch as some of the larger models.”

“The unit arrived a couple of days later. The unit was quickly unpackaged, set up with temporary spacing in the old GE opening and plugged in. The unit was much quieter than the GE unit had been but it is also smaller. While it did take about 5 hours for the unit to initially cool the building and contents (prior 100+ degrees)to about 80 degrees – again the unit is 6000BTU versus 10000BTU (it replaced), it did so quietly. The noise level is about that of a small vibration free fan set at the slowest speed.“
